The paintings explain themselves. They propose a world where one merely has to immerse oneself, says Leonor Fini. She adds that it is difficult to understand a work of art. One must let it act, fascinate or repel. The viewer must allow themselves to contemplate, to undergo, and if they are attracted, called by a painting, it is because there is an element that exists within them (a sensation, a presence, a memory), perhaps inexpressible in words. Xavière Gauthier writes that it is not a matter of explanation here, but simply of establishing some reference points, some milestones, which will be, she hopes, as many points of bewilderment. If she unravels a thread of Ariadne through the obscure and mysterious Finian labyrinths, it is not to guide the reader-viewer towards the exit, the broad daylight, but rather to deliver them, alive, to the Minotaur that is at work, peaceful and threatening, at the center of all of Leonor Fini's canvases.
